Preparatory steps
The video below is missing some preparatory steps I take when uploading a publication:
Step A: Prepare the PDF
- Make sure that the PDF is a web-optimized, screen-resolution PDF. Such PDFs are usually much lighter and accessible to web audiences. In general, PDFs should be no heavier than 2MB, but the lighter, the better. If it’s not below 2MB, please contact the publication designer and ask them to optimize the PDF and re-send it to you.
- Optimize the PDF further by running it through the SmallPDF compressor. (Alternative: ILovePDF compressor.)
Step B: Prepare the cover image
- Extract the cover as a separate PDF by using the Split PDF tool and save to your hard drive.
- Convert the PDF cover to a JPG image by using the PDF to JPG tool and save to your hard drive.
- Resize the JPG image of the cover so that the largest dimension is 1280 pixels by using Pixlr X online image editor; replace the cover image JPG on your hard drive.
- Optimize the new JPG cover image by using TinyJPG image compressor and replace the cover image JPG on your hard drive.
(For details on how to optimize images and PDFs, please see: Optimize media items: images, PDFs.)
Now you will have the following:
- Optimized PDF file of the publication.
- Optimized JPG image of the publication cover.
From here, you can follow the steps described in the training video.
